Using a pilot-centric, qualitative drug risk assessment model to identify opportunities for implementing pharmacogenetics

Abstract Background Risk assessment models are at the core of flight medicine, weighing both impact environment on an aviator and potential medical events in aviators operations. Pharmacogenetics is application a patient’s genetic information to reduce medication risk. Here, we use three conditions commonly encountered by U.S. Air Force’s medicine community (asthma, diabetes, hypertension) demonstrate framework for implementing occupationally relevant pharmacogenetics. We identified medications approved Food & Drug Administration each condition, obtained adverse effects frequencies, scored effect’s work duties from 0 4 increasing severity, used control theory stratify occupational For those within 10% limits, pharmacogenetic was collected PharmGKb. Results observed correlation 0.557 between our risk scores previous reports 20 medications, demonstrating robustness scoring.
